UPDATE: Ground to be broken for the Pre-Fab in late September!
"Every Man's Modern Prefab" Series
Presented by Studio Mod Livin'
Store owners Jill Warner and Erick Roorda have acquired property in Salida, Colorado, and are in the process of planning the construction of a factory built modular home which will be assembled on-site. Of course, the motif will be decidedly modern! This Green Technology reflects the benefits of efficiency in construction (on an assembly line), thereby maintaining high quality and the recycling of materials that would otherwise be wasted. Since interest seems very high, Jill and Erick invite you to join in on the project from start to finish, by conducting seminars in the showroom and an online Blog detailing the process. These 'Pre Fab Lab' sessions are open to anyone with interest, and will be held on the 3rd Thursday of each month between the months of January and July, beginning at 6:00pm. (for those of you not familiar with its location, Salida is a town of 5500 residents 3 hours south of Denver in the beautiful Upper Arkansas River Valley, just below the Continental Divide).
Jan 24 - An Introduction!
What the heck is pre-fab? Isn't that synonymous with trailer parks? What are the benefits, and how do I go about getting started? (answer: we've done the footwork for you, so all the brain-damage for the first-timer is minimized). We will discuss where you can build (just about anywhere) and how to find a suitable site. Other topics will include finding water, running utility lines, acquiring a septic system and dealing with municipalities and local covenants. Costs per square foot and establishing a budget will be addressed in this first session.
Feb 21 - Planning and conceptualizing.
Kyndra Georgeson, our talented in-house designer with a solid architectural background, will review the basics. The simplicity of Pre-Fabs leads to an easy and adaptable floor plan. Made three or four modules (think building blocks), Kyndra will point out ways that can mold the shapes to your individual lifestyle and requirements. Concurrent with the seminars, the actual prototype for Erick and Jill's home will be in the construction process, and, once completed will be available for walk through at North Star Homes on I-25 at Johnson's Corner.
Mar 20 - General Pre-Fab
Hollis Hunt (design specialist at North Star) will review the benefits of Pre Fab. This night will be devoted to general Pre-Fab information, with a question and answer period.
The popularity of this series has made us aware that everyone is coming to the event for different pieces of information. In order to make it easier to address your questions or concerns, we have set up work stations, where you can speak with Steve or Hollis Hunt from Northstar, work with "pre-fab blocks" to get the feel for the endless layout options available, talk with Kyndra from Studio Mod Livin' and sketch out your interior design ideas on graph paper, or check in with Erick and Jill at the wine station about their pre-fab project.
Handouts will be available covering all the previous questions asked at the prior lectures.
April 17- Building Green
Tonight will feature a discussion highlighting the benefits and details of building green. Specifically, we'll delve into how this process results in minimizing the use of energy, water and raw materials while reducing waste. Additional benefits include the reduction of heat loss, taking advantage of natural light and ventilation, and harnessing of solar energy to cut down on heating and cooling bills. Careful sight preparation, conservation of natural habitats and the use of special landscaping brings it all together by decreasing the impact on the environment. Geniuses Hollis Hunt and Steve Bennett will return (again) to impress and entertain us, and Dinah Eskridge will bring focus to the discussion by way of a power point presentation.
Is it possible to develop lighting that works seamlessly with the architecture, enhances function, and at the
same time leaves a lighter carbon footprint? Can something as basic as the way we illuminate our living space contribute to greening on a global scale?
Guest speaker Micaila Vaughn of Pure Lighting will answer these questions and challenge you to consider many more possibilities.
May 22- Foundations: Architectural and Otherwise
Robert "Fitz" Fitzgerald and Momo Morton of Naka Designs will be discussing sustainable design solutions (including green roofs, water re-use, solar orientation, role of landscape and shade as a cooling device, control of construction debris, and ventilation), as well as the role and value of an architect and interior designer. There will be surprises throughout the discussion, a 'must see' event!
Unique lighting for the mod prefab
Katie Miller, mod livin's exclusive lighting designer, will be presenting the decorative lighting package for Jill and Erick's new home at our May 22nd prefab meeting. The unique lighting package will focus on decorative fixtures from our featured line, ET2. Katie will discuss money-saving tips when putting an entire home lighting package together, as well how to go about adding your personal touch to every lighting project.
